UNA RESEÑA (PARCIAL) DEL VOLUMEN ‘SENTIENT CITY: UBIQUITOUS COMPUTING, ARCHITECTURE, AND THE FUTURE OF URBAN SPACE’.-

Podéis encontrar aquí la reseña sobre la edición en inglés del libro SENTIENT CITY: UBIQUITOUS COMPUTING, ARCHITECTURE, AND THE FUTURE OF URBAN SPACE, Ed. MIT Press, 2011. (231 pp. PB, US $24.95), co-publicado por el MIT Press y The Architectural League of New York, como ampliación de la interesante exposición organizada en otoño de 2009 por Mark Sephard y la Architectural League en Nueva York (no hay edición en español hasta la fecha del libro).

La publicación, impulsada por el prestigioso Massachusetts Institute of Technology, (Senseable City Lab, por cuyo trabajo en este campo reconozco cierta debilidad) constituye un verdadero compendio de diversas visiones y programas sobre el futuro de la ciudad, planteadas por distintos pensadores y creadores, que impactan por su presentación y los resultados de sus investigaciones, promoviendo una interesante reflexión en torno a cómo el ubiquitous computing está transformando el diseño y el uso de las edificios, los equipamientos y las propias ciudades, una vez que la informática, sus aplicaciones y la tecnología digital han rebasado los tradicionales confines del hogar y el puesto de trabajo para dispersarse por el entorno ciudadano, ocupándolo de una manera ubicua y omnipresente.

Reseña de la Edición nacional del Diario El Mundo sobre el I Alicante Smart Cities Meeting celebrado en noviembre de 2011.

” (…) A su vez, Pablo Sánchez Chillón, director de Eolexcitylab -empresa con sede en Alicante- y gestor urbanístico, ha argumentado que la urbe inteligente “no es solo tecnología” sino que se asienta sobre los ciudadanos.

El desarrollo de estas ciudades, ha agregado, implica que sus habitantes dejarán de ser “meros receptores de servicios” y que la provisión de servicios públicos será optimizada (energía, movilidad y transporte, educación…).

Dentro de los proyectos de ciudades inteligentes, Sánchez Chillón ha destacado la “marea o tsunami” que está suponiendo la idea del ‘open data’, es decir, las administraciones comparten los millones de datos e información con sus ciudadanos.

Las ‘smart cities’ también deben modernizar la ordenación del territorio -“no se entiende que se haga como en el siglo XIX”-, y sus plazas han de ser lugares “hiper-conectados” para sus habitantes, ha concluido Sánchez Chillón.

ON CITYZENTRISM: THINKERS AND DOERS AMONGST THE DIGITAL LAYERS OF THE SENTIENT CITY. FROM LIVING LABS TO HACKHATONS AND CITY HACKERS.-

City hacking has become a sort of activism fueled by technology and creativity.

Regular readers of this blog have been evangelized about the pros of using technology in the city in building and promoting social consciousness through digital culture and the remarkable results for urban enhancing given by the discovery, development and full understanding of the digital layers by stakeholders, appealing to the central role to be played by the individual and collective members as prosumers at the connected city as an unavoidable premise of the deployment of the smart city.

The question is not only about the benefits of building a civic identity (the self-conscious proud belonging to a community) or displaying a shining digital image of the city but about gaining beneficial outcome from “CITYZENTRISM” (‘Civicentrismo’ in our original Spanish definition - the citizen as the backbone of the smart city) wich implies the social consciousness and co-responsibility of citizens and stakeholders in the connected city by sharing purposes and civic projects spread by technology.

Esta fue la presentación que acompañó la ponencia de Pablo Sánchez Chillón (Urban 360º) en la Jornada Inagural del I Alicante Smart Cities Meeting, celebrado en noviembre de 2011.

Es un archivo abierto y aprovechable por quien quiera utilizarlo. Más de 2800 personas lo han visto y compartido.

Para empezar con esta lista de lecturas recomendadas, cito este clásico, que es en buena medida culpable de mi compromiso con la investigación urbana y la búsqueda de una visión comparada del fenómeno de la urbanización y las ciudades.

Lo considero un libro elemental para conocer la historia del Urbanismo, contado de una manera amena por su autor, Sir Peter Hall, con un punto de anglocentrismo, que no desvirtúa el contenido del manual. Editado tanto en inglés como en español.

The Smart City paradigm is meant to be the last (and beloved) son of Postmodernity for urban territories, providing useful tools (an attractive mix of leadership, infrastructures, services and people powered solutions) for making them more efficient, more sustainable and more livable for citizens, as well as more attractive for tourist and occasional visitors.

Tourism is recognised as a global industry for many territories, which see in it a key source of income and benefits, competing with other places and destinations to attract people and businesses.
